WEEK 2: BASICS OF INTERACTION

What is interaction? reciprocal action, object behaviour, relationships, motion, sound, space, mapping and feedback.

HCI- interfaces, everyday experiences

GUI- screen based, heavily visual and auditory

TUI- tangible, connection through physical materiality, haptics, spatial context, meaningful, simple

Action/ Reaction: a direct use i.e. fading light, dull colour flickering

Charging phone- push action and light, sound, vibration reaction

Turning on TV- push button action (tactical) and light, sound feedback

Turning car on- twist (physical action) and sound, light and vibration reaction

Input/ Output: different sensors and tech involved

Boiling kettle- switch pressed with pressure and heat inputted, sound (bubbling), more heat and light outputs

Type on PC- buttons pressed with pressure input, sound, light, change on interface outputs

Touch screen- pressure, weight, proximity inputs, light, sound, vibration and change on interface outputs

Feedback, Attention, Status: the meanings behind the action/reactions

Kettle:

F- light, push down of switch, sound

A- steam coming out (person aware of change)

S- boiling, bubbling (state of the interaction)

The Minority Report has a famous interface where Tom Cruise uses gestures to move, pinch, rotate and interact with data. I thought the gestural action was a good example of embodied design.
